Cotton Harlequin Beetle

Cotton Harlequin Beetle

I was stopped in my tracks while walking the dog one morning, when I saw this gorgeous beetle. I took a photo (left hand image below) and went home to look it up. It was a female cotton harlequin beetle. Well timed as I'm currently working on a collection of paintings where the common theme is iridescence... so she had to be painted!
The male is even more spectacular, being deep iridescent blue/green with orange markings, almost a perfect reversal of the female colouring.

The finished painting can be found here.
