Eastern Quoll Miniature Painting

The eastern quoll (Dasyurus viverrinus) is a small, spotted carnivorous marsupial native to Australia, once widespread across the mainland, but now extinct there since the 1960s, surviving only in Tasmania and a handful of carefully managed reintroduction sites on the mainland. Lively and nocturnal, it feeds on insects, small mammals and carrion, and is recognised by its distinctive white spots scattered across its fawn or black coat. I've painted this one in gouache and coloured pencil, capturing its alert, inquisitive character in a small, intimate format.

Did you know? Eastern quolls were once common in suburban Sydney, where they were known to enter houses in search of food – a reminder of how dramatically their range has shrunk in just a few generations.
