Original Gouache Painting
A study of a Hawfinch, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.
The hawfinch, scientific name Coccothraustes coccothraustes, is a beautiful, shy bird found in the northern hemisphere, mostly in Europe but also in parts of Asia. It has a very large bill, the largest of any finch in the UK, which has evolved to crack seeds and fruit stones. Their preferred habitat is woodland, high up in trees, usually only seen when foraging on the ground. Their striking plumage is mostly muted peach and orange with black eye mask and bib, and unusually shaped iridescent navy blue wing feathers. Sadly now red-listed in the UK, breeding numbers have declined steeply in recent years.
Did you know? A hawfinch’s bill is strong enough to break open a cherry stone.
