The Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) is one of Britain’s most striking corvids – more often heard than seen, with its loud, rasping alarm call betraying its presence long before a glimpse is possible. Its plumage is a beautiful combination of muted pinkish-buff and black, with a vivid flash of electric blue and black barring on its wings. A member of the crow family found across most of the British Isles, Europe, Asia and North Africa, the jay is perhaps best known for its extraordinary habit of burying acorns in autumn – a behaviour so effective that jays are considered responsible for much oak regeneration across British woodland.

Did you know? A single jay can bury and remember the locations of up to 5,000 acorns in a season, and many of the oak trees in Britain’s ancient woodlands owe their existence to a jay that forgot where it hid one.
