Original Gouache Painting
A small study of an Australian Leafy Seadragon, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.
The Australian leafy seadragon (Phycodurus eques) is a flamboyant marine fish found only in the temperate coastal waters of southern and western Australia, where it inhabits seagrass meadows and kelp-covered reefs. Belonging to the Syngnathidae family, which also includes seahorses and pipefish, it is renowned for its elaborate leaf-like appendages that provide superb camouflage among drifting seaweed. Leafy seadragons are poor swimmers and depend heavily on their camouflage for protection from predators, blending seamlessly into their environment. Interestingly, as with seahorses, it is the male that carries the developing young, brooding the fertilised eggs on a spongy patch beneath his tail until they hatch. This species is considered near threatened, with habitat degradation, pollution, and the pressures of climate change posing risks to its survival.
Did you know? Leafy seadragons are the official marine emblem of South Australia.
