Widely distributed throughout the UK, the blackbird, scientific name Turdus merula, is a species of Thrush. The male is black with striking yellow beak and eye rings; the female is mid-brown with subtle markings. The blackbird's song is melodic and velvety, often being the last to be heard at twilight.
