Blackbird Painting

The blackbird (Turdus merula) is a species of thrush, widely distributed throughout the UK. The male is jet black with a striking yellow beak and eye ring; the female mid-brown with subtler markings. Their song is melodic and velvety, often the last bird to be heard singing at twilight, and one of the most recognisable sounds of the British countryside. I've painted this one in gouache and coloured pencil, aiming to capture the male's sooty plumage and distinctive colouring in fine detail.
