Original Gouache Painting
A study of a Blackcap, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.
The blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) is a widespread and adaptable warbler native to Europe, western Asia, and parts of North Africa, with notable populations present throughout the British Isles. Distinguished by its clear, fluting song and sexually dimorphic plumage—males bearing a distinctive black crown while females display a reddish-brown cap—the blackcap occupies a variety of wooded habitats, including deciduous forests, hedgerows, and suburban gardens.
Did you know? Some blackcap populations have changed their migratory route in recent decades, with increasing numbers now wintering in the UK instead of southern Europe; a behavioural shift attributed to milder winters and the availability of supplementary food in urban environments.
