Bullfinch Painting

The bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) is an occasional visitor to my garden, and always a welcome one. A member of the finch family, the male's beautiful coral-red breast—the colour of a padparadscha sapphire—is contrasted by smart grey and black plumage with a flash of white revealed when he takes flight. The female is equally beautiful in muted shades, as if the saturation on a photograph of the male has been dialled down. Sadly now red-listed in the UK, the bullfinch has declined significantly in recent decades – a reminder of how precious a garden visit from one has become.
