Original Gouache Miniature Painting

A small study of a cinnabar moth; an original gouache miniature painting by Amanda Gosse.
The Cinnabar Moth, scientific name Tyria jacobaeae, is a medium-sized moth with a wingspan of 34–46 mm, named after the bright red mineral, for the colour of its hindwings and the distinctive markings on its forewings. It is common in open grassy habitats, including gardens and woodland. The caterpillar feeds on the leaves and flowers of Common Ragwort, making it poisonous. The moth's striking black and red colours and its caterpillar’s bold yellow and black stripes serve as a warning to deter predators.
Did you know? The Cinnabar Moth flies during the day as well as after dark.
