Original Gouache Painting

A study of a Crimson Rosella, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.

The Crimson Rosella, scientific name Platycercus elegans is a vividly coloured parrot native to eastern and southeastern Australia, including Tasmania. Recognised by its vivid scarlet-red plumage contrasted with blue cheeks, wings, and tail, this medium-sized bird inhabits a variety of wooded environments, from mountain forests to suburban gardens. Despite its bright appearance, the crimson rosella is adept at blending into dappled forest light. It feeds primarily on seeds, fruits, nectar, and insects, often foraging in pairs or small groups. Notably, juveniles are greenish in colour and gradually moult into the characteristic crimson as they mature, a process that can take up to two years.
Did you know? The crimson rosella has a unique and complex vocal range, including a soft, bell-like call that’s often described as musical or flute-like. Remarkably, studies have shown that they can exhibit regional dialects—variations in their calls depending on the geographic area they inhabit—much like human accents.
