Original Gouache Painting
A study of a goldfinch, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.
The European goldfinch, scientific name Carduelis carduelis, is a vividly coloured songbird belonging to the family Fringillidae, widespread across much of Europe and extending into parts of western Asia and North Africa, with populations introduced to other regions such as Australia and New Zealand. Notable for its bright red face, black-and-white head pattern, and distinctive yellow wing flashes, the species is a familiar presence in parks, gardens, and hedgerows. It has a specialised diet, feeding predominantly on small seeds from composite plants, including dandelions and thistles, using its fine, pointed bill with remarkable dexterity. The goldfinch is socially gregarious outside the breeding season, forming flocks that can number in the hundreds. Though once heavily trapped for the cagebird trade, modern legal protections and habitat adaptation have supported its resilience, allowing it to remain common throughout much of its range.
Did you know? The collective noun for a flock of goldfinches is a ‘charm’ of goldfinches.
