Greenfinch Painting

The European greenfinch (Chloris chloris) is a familiar finch of gardens, hedgerows and woodland edges across the British Isles, recognised by its olive-green and yellow plumage with bright yellow flashes on the wings and tail. Once a common sight at garden bird feeders, greenfinch numbers have fallen sharply since the mid-2000s due to an outbreak of trichomonosis—a parasitic disease spread at feeding stations—leading to its red-listed status in the UK. I've painted this one in gouache and coloured pencil, depicting the male in his brightest breeding plumage.

Did you know? The greenfinch's song includes a distinctive wheezing note, a long, drawn-out dzhweee, quite unlike any other British garden bird, making it recognisable by ear as well as by sight.
