Original Gouache Painting
A study of a Jackdaw, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.
The jackdaw, Corvus monedula, is a familiar, sociable member of the crow family native to Europe and western Asia, including the British Isles. Recognisable by its iridescent black plumage, pale grey nape, and beautiful bluish-white eyes, it is one of the smallest corvids found in Britain. Jackdaws are highly intelligent birds known for their complex social structures and vocal communication. Often seen in flocks, they nest in cavities such as chimneys, cliffs, or hollow trees, frequently returning to the same site year after year. Omnivorous by nature, they forage for insects, seeds, fruits, and scraps, adapting well to both rural and urban environments. Protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, jackdaws play an important ecological role in controlling insect populations and dispersing seeds.
Did you know? The jackdaw has been observed recognising individual human faces and remembering whether those people posed a threat or acted kindly toward them. This remarkable ability highlights the jackdaw’s advanced cognitive skills and supports its reputation as one of the most intelligent birds in the world.
