A study of a kingfisher, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.

The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a small freshwater bird, easily recognised by its bright turquoise-blue and orange plumage and long, sharp bill, which is perfectly adapted for catching fish. Found near rivers, streams and lakes, it hunts by motionlessly perching before diving with precision to catch small fish and aquatic invertebrates. Despite its bright colours, the kingfisher is surprisingly elusive, often detected only by its high-pitched whistle or a flash of blue skimming low over the water.
Did you know? Kingfishers nest in burrows that they create in riverbanks.
