Original Gouache Painting
A study of a Kookaburra, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.
The kookaburra, belonging to the genus Dacelo within the kingfisher family (Alcedinidae), is a terrestrial bird native to Australia and New Guinea, renowned for its distinctive call that closely resembles human laughter. Despite its taxonomic classification alongside aquatic kingfishers, the kookaburra is primarily carnivorous and does not rely on fish as a food source; instead, it preys on small vertebrates such as reptiles, rodents, and insects. The most recognised species, the laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae), exhibits strong territorial behaviour and plays a vital role in the ecosystem as a top predator in woodland and forest habitats.
Did you know? The kookaburra's famous “laughing” call is not just a quirky sound—it serves a critical territorial function. Kookaburras use this loud, cackling vocalisation at dawn and dusk to establish dominance over their territory, effectively warning other birds to stay away. These calls are often performed communally by family groups, creating a dramatic chorus that reinforces their presence in the area.
