The peacock butterfly (Aglais io) takes its name from the spectacular eye-like spots on its wings—markings evolved to startle or confuse predators, making it one of the most instantly recognisable British butterfly species. I've painted this one in gouache and coloured pencil, giving close attention to the rich rust and black of its wings and the fine detail of each eye-spot.
