The rainbow bee-eater (Merops ornatus) is one of Australia's most strikingly coloured birds, seen across southern Australia in summer before migrating north to New Guinea and Indonesia for the winter. Measuring just 23–28cm, they are exquisitely coloured, displaying shades of green, brown, yellow and turquoise with a black stripe across the eye and have a particular fondness for catching bees on the wing.
