Original Gouache Painting
A study of a song thrush, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.
The song thrush, scientific name Turdus philomelos, is a much-loved passerine bird, found across the UK in woodland, parks, and gardens. It has a warm-brown head, wings, and back, with a cream breast adorned with distinctive dark brown spots shaped like upside-down hearts, and measures around 23 cm in length. This bird is omnivorous, feeding on earthworms, insects, fruit, and snails, and builds a neat, mud-lined cup nest in which it lays four to five dark-spotted blue eggs. It is partially migratory, with many birds wintering in southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Sadly, the song thrush population underwent a steep decline during the 1970s and 1980s, causing many British gardens to lose their resident birds, though more recently there have been signs of a modest recovery.
Did you know? An individual male song thrush may have a vocal repertoire of more than 100 distinct phrases, many of which are learnt by copying its parents and neighbouring birds.
