Sydney 1932 – Yesteryear Collection
This painting brings together two antique Australian objects – a 9ct gold Southern Cross brooch set with rare Australian teal sapphires, and an early sepia photograph of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The year 1932 marks the opening of the bridge itself, one of the greatest engineering achievements of the twentieth century and a symbol of Sydney that has endured ever since. The Southern Cross, embedded in Australia's flag and its national consciousness, makes the brooch a natural companion – both objects anchored in a particular moment of Australian history. I've painted this in gouache and coloured pencil on 300gsm watercolour paper, working at the fine detail of the brooch's sapphires and gold setting alongside the photographic imagery of the bridge.
If you have family photographs, jewellery or keepsakes you would like preserved in a painting, please contact me to discuss a commission.
