Ten Pound Poms – Yesteryear Collection
This painting brings together a gold boomerang, star and Australia map brooch set with a blue sapphire, a black and white photograph of a P&O ship, and a £10 note from the era, objects that together tell the story of one of the most significant mass migrations in modern history. From 1945 to 1972, over one million people left the UK to begin a new life in Australia and New Zealand, under an assisted passage scheme set up to expand Australia's post-war workforce. For just £10, families packed up everything they knew and boarded ships bound for the other side of the world. As someone with deep connections to both Australia and Britain, this history resonates personally with me, and it's a story I wanted to tell in paint. Find out more about the Ten Pound Pom scheme in my blog post.
