Original Gouache Painting
A study of a European Turtle Dove, an original gouache painting by Amanda Gosse.
The turtle dove, scientific name Streptopelia turtur, is a migratory bird species native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, noted for its gentle purring call and distinctive plumage featuring mottled chestnut and black upperparts. In the UK, it has experienced a dramatic population decline—over 90% since the 1970s—largely due to habitat loss, changes in agricultural practices, and illegal hunting along migratory routes. As the only long-distance migratory dove species in Europe, the turtle dove breeds in open woodlands and hedgerows during summer before travelling to sub-Saharan Africa for the winter. Conservation efforts now focus on habitat restoration and sustainable land management to halt its continued decline.
Did you know? The turtle dove is markedly smaller than other doves, measuring approximately 27cm.
