The eastern whipbird (Psophodes olivaceus) is one of the most distinctive sounds of the Australian bush – a piercing whip-crack call, delivered by the male and answered almost immediately by the female's two-note response, is unmistakable once heard. The bird itself is far less easy to see: dark olive-green, black and white, it moves covertly through dense vegetation in areas along the east coast, from Queensland to Victoria, more often heard than glimpsed.
