The linnet (Linaria cannabina) is a small finch seen in the open countryside and heathland. The male in breeding season plumage is a beautiful bird, with a distinctive crimson flush on the crown and breast set against warm streaked brown. Once one of the most common farmland birds in Britain, the linnet is now red-listed, its numbers having fallen sharply over the past half-century as the weedy field margins and rough grassland it depends on have largely disappeared. It was also once commonly kept as a cage bird, prized for its melodic, warbling song.
