The hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) is one of Britain's most elusive birds, a secretive woodland finch that spends most of its time high in the canopy, rarely giving observers a lucky look. Those who do see it are rewarded with its warm peach and orange plumage, a bold black eye mask, and its extraordinary iridescent navy wing feathers, unlike any other British finch. Its massive bill – the largest of any finch in the UK – is powerful enough to crack open a cherry stone, exerting a force that would put most nutcrackers to shame. It is sadly now red-listed in the UK with breeding numbers in steep decline.
