Native to Europe and parts of Asia, the European or brown hare (Lepus europaeus) is admired for its speed, agility and elusive nature. Although usually shy and active after dark, it is famously seen racing across fields in spring during the breeding season. Unlike rabbits, hares raise their young in a simple ground nest known as a form, with leverets born fully furred and surprisingly independent.
